The annual Kids Heart Challenge is under way, with an official kick-off planned for Monday, Feb. 22. The week-long awareness event takes place in the Elementary School during students' normal gym times and emphasizes the importance of physical activity through such activities as jump rope.

Connected to the week of awareness and physical activities is a community-wide fundraiser. (So far, $479 has been raised toward our goal of $3,000.) It is coordinated by Kevin McKee, the building’s physical education teacher.

OH is one of hundreds of schools across the country participating in the Challenge, which is organized by the American Heart Association. The money helps support ongoing research and education programs in the fight against heart disease. In addition, it qualifies the Elementary School for certificates toward physical education equipment. In short, our school is joining the fight against the nation’s No. 1 killer – cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Family members and friends can support their child’s participation through contributions. All students are welcome to participate, but involvement in the collection portion is purely voluntary. By using the KHC collection envelope (sent home to parents), individuals can easily keep track of their collections. Those who contribute also are able to earn prizes for donations.

There are Thank Yous for each level and they can add up. (We do ask that contributions come from family and friends and that children DO NOT go door to door.)

Contributions can be made to “The American Heart Association.” Return all donations to Mr. McKee by Friday, March 12.
