AFS-USA is looking for host families in Ottawa Hills to welcome an international student next school year.
The program took a pause in 2020-2021 because of COVID-19. In a typical year, Ottawa Hills Local Schools will enroll two students, most of whom are juniors at the Junior/Senior High School.
“If you ask host families about the wonderful international exchange students that they have hosted through the years, they will tell you about the lasting memories and the warm friendships that have developed with students from around the world,” said Linda Sherry, an Ottawa Hills resident and area coordinator of the AFS-USA student exchange program.
Host families provide food, shelter, and loving support throughout the school year. Now is the time for interested families to contact her to learn more about hosting. The biographies for next year's AFS exchange students are available. Check out the great students waiting to become your “son” or “daughter” and our next Green Bear!
Ottawa Hills has had a relationship with AFS for more than 60 years. More than 120 students from around the world have spent a year attending Ottawa Hills. They arrive from many nations, including Pakistan, Norway, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, India, China, Thailand, Argentina, and Chile.
Mrs. Sherry and her husband, Dennis, have hosted six times. She is happy to share stories about her students from Argentina, China, Germany, and Thailand, or about her trips to Europe to visit her AFS son and daughters. “These students truly become a part of your family,” she said.

Erica Scharer and her husband Chris have hosted three AFS students in recent years; she would love to talk about her experiences. She can be contacted at email@example.com or 419-351-7331.
