OSU-UM ticket raffle helping local family

Posted On: Friday, November 15, 2019

Toledo firefighters are using the biggest local college football game of the year to help raise money for a colleague whose son attends Ottawa Hills High School.

The winning ticket drawn from the fundraiser gets four tickets to the Nov. 30 Ohio State-Michigan football game (being played this year in Ann Arbor). Proceeds benefit Miguel Castillo, a 20-year veteran of the city’s fire department who has a rare form of cancer. His son Tony is a ninth-grader.

Prior to his service with Toledo, Mr. Castillo was a part-time firefighter for the Village of Ottawa Hills (1994-96) and then full-time OH firefighter from 1996-2000. Helping organize the raffle is OH resident (and firefighter colleague), Tim Furey.

The winning ticket will be drawn at 6 p.m. on Nov. 23 at Fusion Bistro (3136 Markway Rd.) in the Cricket West Shopping Center. Only 500 tickets are being sold.

Each ticket is $10, or 3 for $20, and can be purchased with cash, check or through PayPal (, Cash App ($ddes300) or Venmo ( In Venmo, search for @Joe-CIRA-1 or @DanDesmond-300. When using Venmo, Cash App and PayPal, include name and phone number as a notation. Winners do not need to be present Nov. 23 to win.

The fundraiser is the latest of many organized by colleagues for the Castillo family, which also includes wife/mother Sally and daughter Emmy. Mr. Castillo's cancer treatments require frequent trips to the hospital. Mr. Castillo is retired from the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Air Force, and was deployed multiple times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
