Austin Book's Club receives OH donation

From left: Heather and Brittany Robbins, co-founders of Austin’s Book Club; Jamie Johnson, a counselor at the Elementary School who connected the district to the group; and Rebecca McLean, the Library Media Center specialist at the Elementary School. The Robbins came by the district Friday (Feb. 7) to collect the books.

Families and students spent more than $12,800 at last month’s Spring Scholastic Book Fair. The sales generated nearly $5,700 in cash and “Scholastic Dollars” to support programs at the Elementary School Library Media Center.

As important, students in grades K-6 raised $2,370.46 for Austin’s Book Club, a local nonprofit that helps place books in the neonatal intensive care unit at ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital. With the money, the district purchased 300 books for the Club.

During the fair, classes competed daily to see which could bring in the most money as part of the “Coin Challenge,” which runs in conjunction with the fall and spring book fairs. This year’s top classes were:

  • 3rd place ($162.77): Amy Lavetter’s 3rd grade classroom
  • 2nd place ($175.43): Jennifer Powers 2nd grade classroom
  • 1st place ($219.75): Grainne Kulka’s 4th grade classroom

Six other classes also collected more than $100: Holly Morgan – 2nd grade ($101.72); Kristin Prevette - 2nd grade ($166.20), Emily Atherine – 3rd grade ($144.34); Tori Norman - 3rd grade ($120.55), Judy Haudan – 4th grade ($117.60); Madelyn Wimmer – kindergarten ($155.15).

The winner of the “Spirit Competition” – honoring the classroom with the highest participation in daily dress-up events – was Grainne Kulka’s 4th grade classroom (79 percent).

Thank you to the Ottawa Hills Schools Parent Association (OHSPA)  for annually organizing the event and to this event’s chairperson, Sally McQueen. Mrs. McQueen and OHSPA coordinated dozens of parent and student volunteers who helped by setting up and tearing down the event; selling books; and bringing in snacks for “Family Night.”
