From: Superintendent Dr. Adam Fineske

Dear parents, staff and other Villagers:

As you know, there have been many new announcements at the state and local level regarding the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) in our country. The latest information we have is that there are still only 3 confirmed cases in Ohio (all in the Cleveland area).

Please know that the health and safety of our students and staff is my top priority. Superintendents representing K-12 school districts in Lucas County met early this morning to determine our next coordinated action steps. At this time, the recommendation from Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is that K-12 educational institutions remain open. Ottawa Hills Local Schools and other area school districts will follow this recommendation and remain open until further notice. Although we are staying open, the following changes in our operations will occur as of Thursday, March 12:

  • All non-essential events that include 100 or more visitors to our buildings are postponed until further notice. (For our district in the coming days prior to Spring Break, this decision means no outside visitors for the 6th Grade Science Expo on Friday, March 13, and the choir and band concerts on Sunday, March 15.)
  • All off-site school field trips scheduled within the school day are postponed until further notice.
  • Trips out of the state sponsored by the district will be decided upon by the Superintendent on a case-by-case basis.
  • Visitors and volunteers to both school buildings should stay home if they are or have recently been or felt ill in any way, including but not limited to having flu-like symptoms that could easily spread to others.
  • Athletic practices and outdoor athletic events will continue as scheduled until further notice unless new information or direction is received from the OHSAA (Ohio High School Athletic Association).

Ongoing District Preparation:

  • Elevated cleaning of all classrooms continues on a daily basis.
  • We will be assessing our continuity plans for teaching and learning, including the use of e-learning and digital or distance-learning options as feasible and appropriate if our district buildings were to be closed.
  • As of today, all State and Advanced Placement testing schedules remain unchanged.
  • As superintendent, I will continue to receive and monitor daily attendance reports for students, faculty, and staff in both buildings.
  • We are closely monitoring the reporting of absentee data to ensure they are reported timely and accurately. We are sharing data trends with local health departments particularly if absences appear due to respiratory illnesses.
  • Going forward and until further notice, if you are calling in an absence, please state the reason when leaving your message.

Continued Ways To Keep Ourselves And Children Safe:

  • Adopt appropriate hand washing strategies: soap and water for at least 20 seconds or a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • Keep your child home from school if he or she is sick.
  • Cover your cough. Use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces
  • Contain germs by steering clear of others who are sick. If you do get sick, stay at home until you’re well again, so you don’t spread more germs.

Our district and others in this region are following the direction and guidance of the Toledo Lucas County Health Department and the Ohio Department of Education. We will continue to update you as new information becomes available.

Thank you for your support of our students and of this district.

- Dr. Adam Fineske
