For the third consecutive year, Ottawa Hills Local Schools has won the All Sports Cup as the best varsity athletic program in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference (TAAC).
The trophy is awarded to the TAAC member whose fall, winter, and sports teams collectively perform the best. Rankings are determined by assigning points to a team’s finish (both girls and boys) in individual sports. (The most points are awarded for a first-place finish.)
“We are so proud of our athletes and coaches,” said Tammy Talmage, the district’s athletic administrator. “Our ongoing success is a credit to them and our terrific parents and fans.”
The Green Bears built a sizable 13-point lead coming out of the fall, as four of seven teams (boys’ and girls’ soccer, boys’ golf, and girls’ cross-country) won their respective TAAC titles. They picked up an additional eight points with the winter performance of the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. Because of COVID-19, the final point totals omit the following spring sports (baseball, softball, and co-ed track and field).
Ottawa Hills has five additional teams, but those athletes do not play for a TAAC title because the sport does not field the minimum number of teams to compete for a championship. Those teams are field hockey (they compete in the Northeast Ohio Field Hockey League) and girls’ tennis (both in the fall) and boys’ and girls’ lacrosse and boys’ tennis (in the spring). Similarly, the district’s Cheerleading squad and Dance Team receive varsity letters and are part of the OH Athletic Department, but do not compete for TAAC titles.
Starting next winter, OH adds a co-ed swimming team as a varsity sport, which will compete independently because there is no TAAC competition at this time.
The final All Sports Cup standings for 2019-2020 are:
