Attendance expectations clarified

The following communication was sent from the Junior/Senior High School this afternoon:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are glad to be back and running with our first week of in-person classes! It has been so nice to see all our students whether present or remote. Our teachers, administration, and staff are excited to be open and educating our most valuable resource: our students!

As this week progressed, however, we decided to send an important message to clarify attendance expectations for both in-person and remote learners.

  • The remote-learning option is intended for children whose families make a commitment to remote learning due to reasons directly related to the pandemic (or for medical reasons and illness of a long-term nature). If a student is absent due to illness, we ask that he or she not attend Google Meet sessions intended for remote learners. Exceptions may be made for long-term illnesses with approval from a building administrator.
  • If you are taking your in-person learning child out of school for an appointment, general illness, or vacation, please contact the office about this absence. If your remote-learning student is going to be absent from class for similar reasons, please follow the same procedures. Absences are recorded as excused when followed by a note or email from the parent upon return to the in-person or remote classroom.
  • We ask that you do not contact your child’s teachers about absences or learning decisions about going/staying remote or in person. All discussions and notifications need to be made through the high school office in relation to attendance.
  • It is also important to remember that according to the Jr./Sr. High School Handbook: “A student must be in school for one half day of classes in order to participate at any practice, performance, competition, etc., after school on the same day. The student must be in school one-half day to be able to practice, perform, or compete on the next day if it is not a school day.”

Finally, please understand that moving your child back and forth between in-person and remote learning is very difficult for his or her teachers. Teachers adjust and prepare for remote and in-person learners differently; recently, these changes in status have been occurring with little notice. We understand that absences will occur and are committed to catching up your child upon return.
