Dear Community,

Prom this year is going to be a little different, as you all know, as a result of the global pandemic we are currently facing: COVID-19. Traditionally, Prom’s location has been kept a secret to the students, community members, and staff; however, because of our current situation this year, this is not possible. With the importance of following coronavirus guidelines, we want to ensure parents, students, and faculty know the precautions being taken to ensure the safety of all.

Without sharing the location of Prom, some may feel uncomfortable sending their child to Prom or may oppose the idea as a whole. This is something that we want to prevent, obviously, as the comfortability and safety of the student body is of utmost importance.

Letting community members know of the location will give them prior notice to the noises associated with an outdoor dance. Just as Homecoming and the Winter Fest, we plan to hold Prom outside. Ottawa Hills constantly strives to continue the valuable traditions that we build on each year, so we are very appreciative and lucky to even have the opportunity to hold Prom. As of right now, we are the only school in the Toledo area that is currently having a Prom for their students. We, as a whole, know this is not ideal, but sacrifices must be made to ensure the protection of students at Prom.

We plan to have prom at our High School, May 8, 2021, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. We have shortened the time from the traditional 3 hours to 2 hours to ensure students have time to prepare for "After Prom," as well as make certain that students are continuously occupied with the numerous and diverse activities. The receiving line will take place from 7:30-8 p.m., with food being served at 8:45 p.m. We have contacted the Ottawa Hills Police Department and plan to have two officers present to ensure students stay safe while making unforgettable memories.

We are arranging to have one large tent to warrant social distancing and COVID-19 provisions as well; activities will take place both in and outside the tent, considering the weather conditions.

We are aware that some of the precautions and restrictions might change come May; however, changing our current plans is very difficult. As a result, we are planning Prom as if it is next week, with the current limitations and provisions in mind.

We hope that all accept this current plan, and the unfortunate breaking of tradition in the aspect of secrecy of location; however, we promise Prom is going to be an unforgettable experience for students to carry with them the rest of their lives!

Go Green Bears!
