French en plein air

French 1 students at the JHHS love educator “Madame Hanlon” and how she provides fun, hands-on, out of the box, and even at some points “out of the normal classroom” unique lessons that help our students master the French language!

Here students engage in a rapid conversation activity at the Liberty Memorial outside the JHHS.

Having fun in French

OHHS Art Club students are working in collaboration with “art teacher extraordinaire” Ms. Caitlin Shawaker and are making toilets into amazing works of art! These concept designs are part of World Toilet Day, which aims to bring awareness to clean water and sanitation issues globally.

AP Chemistry with Dr. Kreischer Gajewicz

AP chemistry students who are having a blast studying the wave-nature of electrons by observing emission spectra. Dr KG is leading them to big success.

Music class incorporates Hispanic Heritage Month

Music is so important to the overall student experience for our kids!

No matter what, there is always something creative, cute and musically fun going on in Mrs. Manchur’s elementary music classroom. These awesome 1st graders learned a song called “Zapatito Blanco” for Hispanic Heritage month and are playing the game that goes with it. The song is in Spanish and originated in Mexico. They are using it to review quarter and eighth note rhythms as well.

How organisms found indicate water quality in the Ottawa River

Green Bear 5th graders in Mrs Genzman’s science classes had a great time getting additional practice assessing the biological health of a waterway using macroinvertebrates prior to their water sampling right in our own backyard from the Ottawa River!

Students rotated between two stations where they used a dichotomous key to identify unknown macroinvertebrate samples they may encounter and then sampling for macroinvertebrates in our "dry stream" and coming up with a water quality rating based on the organisms found!

Honors Biology investigates cell membranes

Students in both Mrs. Puskala and Mrs. Silvers Honors Biology classes spent time investigating the properties of cell membranes with their lab partners.

ASL offered as a world language option

Did you know that Ottawa Hills High School is one of the only schools in NW Ohio and across the state that offers ASL (American Sign Language) as a world language option?

We are so proud of this program and how it helps make our student experience one of the best! Here are students in Ms. Erin Marsh's ASL class during Deaf Awareness Month in September.

Harold C. Shaw state science fair award

Ottawa Hills was 1 of 12 schools in Ohio to earn the Harold C. Shaw school award for schools competing at the highest level at the state science fair. All of the Ottawa Hills students that participated in the state science day earned superior ratings!

Congrats to Mr. Nixon’s Honors Scientific Research class and Honors Biology class students for earning this award for the 2022/2023 State Science Day completions.

Hands on learning at Fossil Park

Awesome “hands-on learning” experiences outside of the regular classroom setting for our kids, makes the Green Bear overall student experience so special!

4th graders and their teachers, Mrs. Kulka, Mr. Wells, Mrs. Hauden and Mrs. Love explored, dug up and hunted for real fossils right here in NW Ohio at Fossil Park in Sylvania.

Daily writing time connects students

Students in Ms. Palko’s 8th grade ELA classes participate daily in 5 minutes of what is called “Sacred Writing Time."

Students are given a daily writing prompt, then conference with a peer to critique each other's writing and give positive feedback, as well as areas to refine based on the idea writing trait from our 6 Traits of Writing curriculum.

This exercise is great way for students to not only improve their writing skills, but also learn more about each other.

Honors Scientific Research students presents data at International Great Lakes Commission meeting

We are Green Bear proud of our kids taking on transformative experiences throughout NW Ohio! 💚

On Wednesday, October 4th, senior Honors Scientific Research student Olga Isailović presented her 2022-2023 project “Establishing a Difference Between the Relative Frequencies of Microcystins Using Different Methods of Lysis Induction” at the 2023 International Great Lakes Commission meeting held in Oregon, Ohio.

Isailović was selected as one of two youth speakers to share her findings on Lake Erie in collaboration with the University of Toledo, and represent Ohio at the conference as a member of the Department of Natural Resources’ Teen Advisory council."

Olga made quite the impression and presented data and information that will make a big difference to future development and conservation of our Great Lakes!

Study skills keep students prepared

Students in Ms. Palko’s study skills classes learning how to strengthen their executive functioning by sharing different memory strategies they use to help them remember information.

Ms. Palko’s old fashioned strategy of drawing a string around her finger with a Sharpie pales in comparison to the strategies the students are using these days. They learned from each other and shared many great ideas like timers on their phones, calendar apps, Apple notes, and even “to do lists” next to their beds so they are reminded first thing in the morning.

Math creates art!

Students in Ms. Fowler’s Honors Algebra 2 classes focused on piecewise functions, and restricting the domain and range of graphs to create pictures. The students used Desmos, an online graphing program, to come up with the functions needed to create pictures, then used transformations to move and manipulate the functions while restricting the domain and/or range to create their finished drawings.

Ottawa River provides outdoor classroom

Students in Mrs. Genzman's 5th grade science held class by the Ottawa River recently as part of their Life Sciences unit studying Interactions in Ecosystems. Community partners from GM Environmental Engineers helped students test water quality with chemistry kits donated by the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments. Students also learned about clearing invasive species with The Nature Conservancy, and learned to identify benthic macroinvertebrates.
