2022 - Section 2 state champs in chess

Congrats to the Reserve Section team (from left) of Eleza Zaidi (6th Grade), Raaghav Gundabolu (4th Grade), Jude Martinez (2nd Grade), and Bobby Chapman (5th Grade). Sharing the moment with the team is coach Ryan Clayton.

OH chess teams had a record-setting performance this weekend at Ohio's Middle School State Championships in Columbus. Eight students competed in two sections: Reserve (new players and players with ratings under 1,000) and Championship (best players in the state). The Green Bears took first in both sections, the first time a single school has done so at the Middle School Championships!

And 8th Grader Rohan Padhye went 6-0 to be crowned the state’s Middle School Champ and moves on to represent Ohio at nationals.

Taking first in the Reserve Section was the OH team of Eleza Zaidi (6th Grade), Bobby Chapman (5th), Raaghav Gundabolu (4th), and Jude Martinez (2nd). Special congratulations to Eleza for tying for fifth and Raaghav for taking second.

Taking first in the Championship Section (and earning the title as best in Ohio) was the OH team of Rohan, Jeremiah Leeds (8th), Nick Thompson (6th), and Pranathi Gundabolu (6th). By winning the tournament, Rohan will represent Ohio in the Middle School Tournament of State Champions July 30-Aug. 2 in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Rohan is the second Toledo-area player ever to play in a Tournament of State Champions, and the first from the Middle School competition.
