Elementary School students and staff helped Roger pass his final evaluation for certification as a therapy dog by the international organization, Alliance of Therapy Dogs.

The Golden Retriever, owned by Villager and parent Carrie Connelly, was required to pass a test to make sure he had the right temperament for therapy dog work, and then pass three observed visits to facilities that include two visits to a medical facility. Ottawa Hills Elementary was his third and final facility visit as part of his certification process.

Students, teachers, and staff had fun interacting with Roger and helping him meet his requirements.

Therapy dogs are dogs that volunteer with their owners to provide comfort to people in many settings including airports, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, schools, hospitals, courts, college campuses, hospice facilities, cancer centers, and even in crisis situations.

Now that Roger is certified as a therapy dog, he intends to become certified as a Reading Education Assistance Dog (R.E.A.D.) to improve literacy skills in children by listening to them read!
