Eighth graders and STEM kites

Students in Patty’s Dowd eighth-grade STEM classes recently designed and constructed their own tetrahedral kites out of tissue paper, straws, and string as part of their unit on flight and space.

In addition to the kites, the students created hot air balloons and hovercrafts. At the end of the unit, students put their work to the test and took their kites behind Niedermeier Stadium.

“These introductory projects are a lot of fun and provide some examples for the students to relate to later in the course as they learn more about the science and physics behind their flying machines,” said Mrs. Dowd.
