Students at the art museum

October and November will be filled with exciting visits to the Toledo Museum of Art for students at the Elementary School.

Already this month, fourth graders went on a Sculpture Tour Oct. 1, which included seeing an Alexander Calder mobile, Henry Moore’s “Reclining Figure," and many other examples of 3-D art. Students found samples of free-standing, subtractive, and even kinetic sculptures. Also included during the visit were a striking Modigliani portrait and Claude Monet’s beautiful “Water Lilies,” both of which were inspirations for in-class art projects.

Students with Mrs. BodziakA week later on Tuesday, Oct. 8, second graders searched for different styles of paintings. They found amazing examples of seascapes and landscapes, cityscapes, portraits and even a real Piet Mondrian abstract!

On Thursday, Oct. 10, third graders had an eventful tour of the Toledo Art Museum. The theme was “The Art of Seeing Art.” Students have been studying the art elements and principles in weekly art classes so they can intelligently discuss the lines, shapes, colors, space, and texture in an art work. The museum docents were impressed with our students’ level of knowledge and perception.

Vincent van Gogh’s “Wheatfields with Reaper” was a highlight of the tour, as third graders have been studying this artist’s life and art. Other works showcased were Henri Matisse’s “Apollo” wall mural and the Sol Lewitt painted hallway. It was an awesome and informative tour!

More upcoming Art Museum trips:

  • First Grade: Oct. 24. Theme: Creatures Great and Small
  • Fifth Grade: Nov. 15. Theme: Art of America
  • Sixth Grade: Nov. 20. Theme: Ancient Civilizations
